Ericsson to be technical and services partner for NTL in the U.K. - MarketWatch

Swedish telecommunications equipment maker Telefon AB LM Ericsson (ERICY) Monday said NTL Inc (NTLI) has selected Ericsson as a technology and services partner to help with developments to its telephone network using VoIP technology.
Ericsson said a 5-year agreement has been signed by the two companies. The initial phase of the agreement is to help build a Residential Voice-over-Broadband service utilizing the Ericsson Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem platform which has been installed and is undergoing testing ahead of launch.

Ofcom today announced the next stage of its work to encourage competitive Next Generation Networks (NGNs).

NGNs use digital technology to connect telephone calls and other network traffic more efficiently than traditional telecoms networks. Internet Protocol (IP) based services can be developed more quickly and at lower cost to communications providers.

Over time NGNs will offer consumers a wider choice of innovative new products and more value for money. However to ensure these benefits are delivered, providers need to agree the technical and commercial arrangements for connecting to each other’s networks.

NGN development is a significant technological change which requires substantial investment and detailed planning. After a public consultation published in June 2005, Ofcom has today set out its approach to facilitating effective cross-industry coordination and to providing greater clarity to operators and investors about the regulatory framework for NGN development.
